Volvo C70 Convertible

Following up on the successful launch of its Volvo C70 coupe at September’s Paris Auto Show, Volvo previews a convertible version this year in Detroit.

It will be the first drop-top offered by the Swedish carmaker since the 1956 Volvo Sport.

Like the Volvo C70 Coupe, the convertible is built on a front-wheel-drive chassis updated from the current 850 model lineup.

Sedan and wagon versions will share the rounder look and the new 70-series designation.

Developed as an antidote to a safe-but-stodgy image, the Volvo C70 coupe and convertible will offer performance and handling to match their sporty looks.

The chassis was developed with help from Tom Walkinshaw Racing, a racing shop whose activities range from competition sedans to the Formula One world championship.

Engine options include two versions of Volvo’s in-line, five- cylinder engine — a 190-horsepower, 2.5-liter “light-pressure” turbo, and a 2.3-liter edition that generates 240 h.p. with higher boost pressures.

The Volvo C70 coupe is to be available in U.S. Volvo showrooms this spring, but the convertible version isn’t scheduled to arrive until the spring of 1998.
