Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Classic Motor cars: Chevrolet

Chevrolet’s Monte Carlo returns for 1998, with few changes. Two options are worth noting, though.

The 3.4-liter V-6 has been replaced in the Z34 by the 3800 Series II V-6 used in several applications within General Motors. Also, the OnStar mobile communications system, available in only Cadillac models last year, is offered as an option on this year’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe.

In its fourth generation, the current version of Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe was introduced in 1995. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe badge dates back to 1969, when it was first launched as a 1970 model. Much has happened to it and Chevrolet in those 28 years. When first introduced, Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe was based on the Chevelle and was powered by a 250-horse-power V-8, although a 360-horse-power 454 V-8 option was available.

Today, it shares mechanicals with Lumina and the most powerful engine in its arsenal is the 200-horsepower 3800 V-6. Times have certainly changed.

There will be few arguments that the current Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe is more sophisticated, better engineered and safer than its brutish forebear. While it may not have the raw power of some earlier Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupes, there is still much to like about this coupe.

The ‘98 Monte Carlo Chevrolet delivered was the higher performance Z34. Its dark green metallic exterior and tan leather interior made for a handsome package. The 3.8-liter 3800 V-6 is a well-proven gun in General Motors’ arsenal. It is easily one of the better engines GM has ever produced. At 5,200 rpm it delivers 200 horsepower, while its 225 foot-pounds of peak torque arrive at 4,000 rpm. This is 15 fewer horsepower, but five more foot-pounds of torque than the 3.4-liter V-6 it replaces. Somewhat smoother and more efficient, the 3800 gains about 10 percent in fuel economy over the 3.4L. The only transmission offered is a four-speed automatic.

Chevrolet has tweaked the Z34’s independent suspension with four-stage valving in the front struts. Chevrolet says this adds more ride control over a wider range of suspension movement, but it is difficult to tell without driving the 1997 and 1998 back to back. The ride, though, is fairly comfortable. A bit more feedback through the steering wheel would be an improvement. Four-wheel disc brakes reel in the Z34, the LS has a disc/drum setup. An anti-lock brake system is standard on all Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupes.

Next to its engine, the Z34’s best feature is its interior. It is well appointed with such features as air conditioning with dual-zone temperature control and remote keyless entry standard on the uplevel Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe. It’s roomy up front and survivable in the rear. The front bucket seats aren’t exactly contoured, but are supportive enough.

All of the gauges and controls are well-placed. Large round knobs, supplemented by dual-zone temperature levers control the ventilation system. There is plenty of storage inside the cabin, while the ample trunk can be enlarged by folding down the split rear seat. A bit thick, the C-pillars hamper rear visibility.

Even with its beefed-up engine, four-wheel disc brakes and other extras, the Z34 is still a solid value. With a base sticker of $20,295, it delivers a lot of bang for the buck. On the Z34’s standard features list: variable intermittent wipers, dual air bags, daytime running lamps, power locks/windows, remote keyless entry, dual power outboard mirrors, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM stereo/cassette, sports suspension, cruise control, power trunklid release, dual temperature controls, air conditioning, steering-wheel-mounted redundant audio controls, luggage area convenience net and carpeted floor mats.

My test Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe also had an electric sunroof ($700), electric rear-window defogger ($170), decklid spoiler ($175), upgraded audio system with CD-player ($93), six-way power driver’s seat ($305), and leather package ($645) with bucket seats, full floor console and four-way manual seat adjuster. Adding the $550 destination charge brought the price as tested to $22,933.
